Farah Fawcett is listed on the official site of the Oscars at oscars.org/academy/members/memoriam.html. Michael Jackson is not even listed there. He must have been added in because of his popularity.
Bea Arthur was a TV actress, not a movie actress. Apparently, looking at the length of the list of all those that have passed, they just chose certain ones to honor. Maybe they were past recipients or part of the Board at some point.
Who knows? They put on who they wanted, I guess. Farah was ignored for days after her death because of Michael's death being in the headlines.
They did give coverage to her death a few days after she died on some of the stations. When something big happens in the news, some news gets overshadowed by the bigger event. People knew Farah was dying for a long time and they had a special that she had done about what she was going through before she died.
She was a very brave lady and a wonderful actress, especially in Extremities.
